Roofing Terms

Deck/Sheathing - The main roof surface or what the roof is attached too, usually plywood.

Dormer - A structure projecting from a sloped roof, usually with a window. 

Drip Edge - Metal attached to the edge of the roof as a trim detail to force water to drip clear of the roof deck, usually into gutters. 

Eave Edge - This is the edge you would typically attach gutters to low edge of sloped roof may include an overhang with the underside being the soffit area of the structure. 

Fascia - the board or metal that is attached to the end of the rafters. Most homeowners would recognize this as the piece behind the gutters. 

Felt - An asphalt based rolled roofing matte laid over the decking or underneath the roofing to further protect the deck from water and also providing a fire barrier or class-A fire rating. 

Flashing - Metal installed wherever two or more surfaces meet perpendicularly, to keep out water. i.e. chimney or wall flashing. 

Ice Water Shield - Applied or sticks down directly to the plywood at the eaves edge, prevents the water that pools behind an ice formation from entering the structure. 

Ventilation - Used to keep the attic space cool and assist in reducing the amount of ice build up and interior condensation. Ridge vent, soffit vent, gable end vent and roof vents.

Gable Roof - A roof design where the roof is typically two sides or up and over or /\ . 

Hip Roof - A roof design that all edges of the roof are eave edges, or a gutter could attach to all edges. 

Ridge - Typically known as the roofs peak. 

Valley - Where two roof slopes meet and the water accumulates. 

Soil Stack Flashing - Pipe protruding through the roof to vent sewage gas, typically a rubber or lead flashing. 

Most roof leaks are caused from improper installation of details. never except tar and granules. If someone is really cheap they may have include short cuts. You now have the basic terminology and knowledge to assist you in finding the right contractor. We hope it is us.
